Dentures Q & A

What are the pros and cons of dentures?

Dentures are a great fit for many people who want to replace multiple lost teeth, while others are better suited for a different approach.

Dentures are a good option if you:

  • Have more missing teeth than remaining teeth
  • Your remaining teeth have significant decay
  • You want a less expensive smile restoration than available through dental implants
  • You want to preserve your smile while you save up for dental implants
  • You have an immune system disorder that makes invasive tooth replacement options particularly risky

Dentures may not be the best choice if you:

  • Want the most natural-looking option
  • Don’t want to bother with removing and cleaning your dentures
  • Want a permanent option that doesn’t require periodic repair
  • Don’t want to replace your dentures every 3-6 years

What is the process like for getting a set of dentures?

The process begins with a comprehensive dental exam. Dr. Burley checks the health of your teeth and gums, and determines what restorative work — if any — is required.

If your remaining teeth have significant areas of decay, you may need to have them extracted prior to having dentures made. After your gum tissue has had a chance to heal, the next phase begins.

Dr. Burley takes an impression of your mouth, which provides the dental lab with the data they need to craft your custom dentures. You’ll work with her to choose the size, shape, and color of your dentures, in an effort to reach the most natural-looking outcome possible.

Once your dentures arrive at Burley Cosmetic Dentistry, you’ll return for the initial fitting appointment. Dr. Burley shows you how to wear your new dentures, and makes notes on the general fit. You’ll wear them until your next visit, when you can report back about any areas of discomfort.

The next visit allows Dr. Burley to make any necessary adjustments to help make your new dentures as comfortable as possible. Thereafter, you’ll simply come back in for routine dental exams to keep your mouth healthy and happy.

Do dentures require any special care?

Dentures are incredibly durable, and are made to last. That said, there are some basic upkeep needed to keep your dentures looking their best.

You should strive to:

  • Brush your dentures thoroughly at least once a day
  • Remove dentures and rinse them after meals
  • Thoroughly clean your mouth while your dentures are out
  • Soak your dentures overnight
  • Take care not to drop or bend your dentures
  • Schedule an appointment if anything changes with your dentures
